New Zealand Fishing Guide

Fly Fishing Conditions

South Island 5-7 wt
Most of the rivers in the South Island can be fished with a 5 - 7 weight 9ft rod. For small tributaries a 4 wt may also be used.

North Island 5-8 wt
8 weight rods are popular on bigger rivers like the Tongariro, though most rivers can be fished with a 5 – 7 weight rod.

Lines are weight forward or double taper line, nine foot leader and plenty of backing will be adequate for most fishing conditions
